What a weird idea. A game that has both Squaresoft and Disney characters in. A game that has both Squaresoft and Disney influences. This sounds like something that would never happen because it would never work. Well it has happened and it does work. Kingdom Hearts is the result of both theses companies creative ideas. It does have a kiddie feel but it's a very good games overall..
It's an action and a role-playing-game. It takes the finer point from both genres and puts them together. The gameplay is fun and addictive. Every world in the game (with the exception of the first two) are based on classic Disney movies. They range from Agrabah from Aladdin all the way to Halloween Town from The Night Before Christmas. Theses worlds are small but very colourful. Every world has a basic storyline: go into the world meet the hero and defeat that worlds major bad guy. Now there is a lot of wandering around waiting for the next event to start. But as I said before the worlds are small so you're bound to wander into the next event sooner than later.
The story is very engaging. It's entertaining and you wonder what will happen next. The mystery around the Key Blade and all the other story elements, like Riku's anti-hero quest all are very interesting. Now it can get corny at times, but that should be expected because it's Disney. Sora's (main character) quest does have an eventful end but it takes a while to get there. So if you're looking for a quick action game look elsewhere.
The graphics are amazing. Each world is full of colour and lush environments. The in game cutscenes are ok. You can tell which ones they spent more time on. The pre-rendered scenes show of yet again what Squaresoft (now Square Enix) can do with these kind of games. These some of the best graphics currently on the PS2, in my opinion.
Overall, this is an engaging RPG/action game. It's colourful and fun. I really enjoyed it from start to finish. It had all the things that could entertain the Disney audiences and just enough to entertain hardcore Squaresoft fans. If your looks for a light RPG or and deep action game I suggest you pick it up. Also, if you're older, don't dismiss it just because of the Disney label. It's really a good game
