The only other Breath of Fire game I've had the pleasure of playing was a Game Boy Advance version that I sold before I even finished the game.  Now that's not a sign that I didn't like it, I just felt that I had outgrown playing a children's handheld system.  This BOF however I haven't sold yet I and I still enjoy it to this day (I wrote this review a while ago and I've sold it now).  The BOF isn't only an new kind of game for this series it's a new kind of RPG.

The game has an interesting enough storyline.  It wasn't a breakthrough one but it was original and an entertaining endevour.  The story starts with the main character (who is still named Ryu) and it goes through him meeting the two other main characters ( Nina and Lin) and thier quest to escape their underground society to get to the surface.

The game play entertains as well.  BOF: DQ introduces a new type of battle system called P.E.T.S.  P.E.T.S stands for Positive Encounter and Tatics System.  This is a strategy based fighting system.  Instead of non-stop random battles like most RPG's this system allows you to see the enemies walking around on the screen, who ever strikes first (you or the enemy) gets the "extra attack" or an additional attack at the beginning of the battle.  There are also various traps that you can set to attract or damage enemies with.  This was an entertaining new battle system for an RPG and I enjoyed playing it.

There is also a strange mini game where you kinda raise an ant colony.  It's more like you issues orders and build various thing like a research lab to reseach new items all the way to a newspaper room where you hire some ants to make the colony newspaper.  I cannot fully explain this mini game you will just have to experiance it for yourself.

Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter isn't your ordinary RPG.  It gives us a new battle system to experiance along with a orginal but basic storyline.  The game was generally entertaining however I won't recommend it to everyone.  This game is for people who can handle that you will get to a certain point where you cannot progress any further and you have to start over.  If you are one of the few lucky people who can handle this, then I recommend this game to you.
