I did not get a chance to play the PC version of Mafia. From the various reviews I read, it was a spectacular game. The PS2 version however wasn't that great. From what I've heard the story didn't change in the transfer from PC to PS2. I had no problems with the story, unfortunatly no story can hold an entriely bad game together
The main plot in the game was sort of like watching a movie. It was so nicely put together that I waited for the next cut scene to start. The taxi driver turned mafia hitman was an original storyline and as you can tell I enjoyed.
One major problem I had with the game was the loading. It was so slow that it almost took you right out of the game. You could be racing to get somewhere on the other side of the bridge and the loading screen would pop up and take 3-4 minutes to finish. That was enough to take some of the action out of the game
The old time cars looked nice, but they drove terrible (which is accurate I guess). It took them a while to speed up and then when you need to stop, their brakes where not so good. The city just looked like a pasted on background and it did't complement the cars at all.
This game's previews compared it to the two new games in the Grand Theft Auto series, predicting it would just be a clone, 1930's style. After playing Mafia it is clear that it's not a GTA calibur game. The storyline was good but it couldn't make up for the bad game play. If your interested in a good story then buy this game but from the driving and fighting part it's a waste.
