Need for Speed: Underground clearly suceeded where others failed. What I mean to say is, games like Midnight Club and its sequel Midnight Club 2, made a modest attempt and a game for "The Fast and The Furious" genre. They looked like great street racing games until NfS: UG came out. This game really raises the bar in the street racing genre. The gameplay, the graphics, even the cutscenes are great and fun.
Let me start with the graphics. The graphics in this game are some of the best I've personally ever seen on the PS2. The cars look realistic and the streets always look wet so you can see their reflections.
The games circiut racing is like any other game circiut racing except you don't get rewarded for third or second place. If you don't get first you don't win anything. There are also two new interesting racing modes. The first is drag racing mode. This mode you really feel the speed. All you do is change lanes to avoid traffic. And instead of automatic cars you must drive standard and shift you gears at exactly the right time. The second is drift racing mode. This mode you must drive around a curvy track and try to make your car skid as long as possible without hiting the walls. Not as innovative as drag mode but still fun to play.
The game has an extremely unique cutomizing mode. There are so many ways in which you can change your car that I would be surprised to see any two people anywhere with the same car design. The are also a variety of aftermarket parts you can chose from but they all do the same thing in their respective areas.
The game is one of the best racing games I have played. When your racing you can really feel the speed, its an intense game. I recommend this game to anyone who is a fan of racing games and if you aren't a fan but curious, this is a great game to start with.
