If you want a nice story driven game in the tough guy genre of Grand Theft Auto, then Mafia may be just the game for you. Unlike the GTA series which relies a lot on the wow factor (unique jumps, rampages, fast action), Mafia is more slowly paced, but still a lot of fun to play.
I like that you start out with slower cars and less impressive weapons and earn your way to speedier wheels and more deadly forces as the missions progress. That you have to take extra time to reload your weapon or drive around seems to fit better with the time period (mid-late 1930's). The missions are fun, original and varied, and take a bit of strategy from time to time (more like GTA3 than the Vice City).
It would be great to see a sequel to this game, updated to the 1940's...
