Ah, Morrowind. I remember blowing so much time on this game. But then again, was it really 'blowing' it? Wasting it? Hell, not with a game as good as this.
Morrowind is one of those RPGs that you know some people are going to hate- the one so big and complex that a lot of people will get lost and bored quickly. That's not to say that I did, however. Or any gamer with half a mind, for that matter. Sure, it's a massive gameworld with a complex history and story, intricate weapon and armor design, deep table of skills and abilities, a detailed graphics engine, and a Byzantine spell system. But, unlike some games, the complextity actually does add to the gameplay. Remember all of those games where the micromanaging just drove you insane? This isn't one of them.
Instead, it's an exceedingly fun, beautiful, and intelligent RPG. So many of the genre fall flat in at least one of those categories- Neverwinter Nights, for example, is loads of fun and very challenging and intelligent, and Dungeon Siege is lots of mindless fun and gorgeous to look at, but its intelligence... well, let's just say it's a Diablo II clone. Cloning a clickfest isn't rocket science.
But what is rocket science is the amount of detail put into this game- from the novel skill/class/ability system, which provides practically infinite replay, to the sprawling, open-ended nature of the game- I have a friend who's played the game for months and hasn't even started the main quest- to the excellent mod community, this game is simply a winner. I haven't had this much fun with an RPG since I was temporarily able to kick my NWN addiction.
That's not to say this game is without cons though. Number one is the stability. In two words, it sucks. I often get lags and crashes even with a good machine- and a program that increases stability. Then, you have the multiplayer. There isn't any. Which is a real letdown- I would have loved to go online with my Dark Elf Blademagi.
But are these flaws enough to bring Morrowing down? Not in my book. It's still a great game, despite the stability issues and limitation to single-player. It's still a game that will syphon hundreds of hours of your life, and later, your soul.
