I really enjoyed the first two games and I had mixed expectations towards this game. I was afraid that RockStar ruined the series by taking it in to a 3D environment but I was also curious to see it. GTA3 turned out to be fine!
This wasn't "mind blowing" game but it didn't really suffer from any big flaws or either suprised me in any ways. The problem is that it didn't match its hype.
The graphics are great - that is not surpising - but the textures sometimes fell apart. Otherwise, the technical side is good but the difficulty level can jump too much during the game. The story is too lame to be convincing and sometimes all the blood and violence made me feel sick! Don't get me wrong, the violence isn't bad thing but too much is too much.
Another flaw occured in the A.I - there wasn't any! Really, the cops drove like maniacs, criminals aimed liked they were blind (and shot in the same way until they got shot) and everything just felt brainless. All that money spent on the game and they can't hire a proper A.I programmer!
The controls were easily accesible and driving was always fun. Controlling the airplane and boat was from impossible to difficult. The boat was hard to handle in storm which brought some realism to the game. The chases in the sea was nice change. Otherwise, realism shines with its absence! Which is not a bad thing, not bad at all.
The game isn't short and it should give many hours of gameplay but it might turn out to be too hard in the end. If you're tired of all the violence you can just drive in Liberty City which is very relaxing - untill cops smash your car and go after you!
The music is something special in the game. You can also play your own MP3's but the music coming from the "local" music stations is very good. There is many good jokes in the "commercials" as well. The game never really gets boring but rarely gets very interesting either. This isn't the best game ever but certainly not a game to by pass.
