Finally, a game that earned its T rating with dark content, a raw world an realistic characters. It's a lot like playing through a large fantasy novel with SNES graphics on the PS 1. But this is a LONG story, not one for casual RPG players. I think the reason Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest for the purists)has less of a US following that FF is the huge jump in difficulty. Not to mention that DW VII looks a lot like the very first one on the NES that most of us have played through. Simplistic graphics aside, the gameplay has not evolved much from the first installment. But enough of what's wrong, let's get to the good stuff. A rich, huge world to explore, tons of items, secrets, and difficulty. This is a HARDCORE RPG, not for casuals players, I must repeat. This is a very big game. Final Fantasy IX (Read my Review) covers four CD's and still is not as long as this game. The campy graphics and music remind me of what is important to me in RPG gaming, and why I still love the genre, after all this time. Exploration, story, tarvel and adventure is what I like, even at the expense of graphics. The people in the story are unpolished and rugged like real people. The lie swear, cheat, drink, and even try to murder their own spouses. There are no "Son of a submariner" (FF III or FF VI Japan)moments here, where the humor suffers due to political correctness. The dialog is gritty and funny where it needs to be, and moves the story along in a good way. But this gem has flaws, of course. The Job System is far too complicated, and you WILL spend a load of time LEVELING UP, or getting your ass handed to you by the bad guys in the game. The enemies are also a high point, cheesy and cool at the same time. So, if you're a fan of what most would call 'old school' RPG's this is your stuff. Fans of the Dragon Warrior series will want to hunt this one down. You MIGHT have enogh time to finish it befor the new one comes out.
