Wow, what can I say that hasn't already been said? GTA has been close to my heart since the beginning in 1998. Since the release of GTA3 in 2001, its runaway success has been a mixed bag to me. I was quite pleased that it was finally getting the respect it deserved,
but I'm constantly irritated by the fact that everyone jumped on the bandwagon. Clones of the game were being made left and right, and worse, suddenly every videogame magazine and player sang its praises and explained how the series was always on the cutting edge. It's funny then that I remember in about 1999 people complained how the game wasn't good due to its simplistic graphics, and the add-on GTA London pack was disregarded because while it was a cool idea in theory, "why be for a game like GTA?"
Well, now, at least I can rest assured that GTA has indeed become a bonafide hit regardless, and I for one am glad since I've always supported it.
In Vice City, you can do just about anything. Drive down the beach at night,
pick up companionship, start gang wars, look for hidden items and weapons, and just steal any car you want. And it's always a thrill to gun down 50 people and fly from the cops while blasting the radio (Atomic is THE song for this).
Of course games like Morrowind give you one of the more complete open-ended experiences, GTA is just about the best place to go for uninhibited criminal activity. I think my murder score is somewhere around 13,000, which would make me the world's far deadliest serial killer. But that's the fun..It's just a game, and I know when I turn it off that I'm not any more violent. But to escape into a world of thrills where I have the choice of just being a total jerk on the way to success..Well, that's
some good old fashioned escapism, and Vice City gives you that experience in droves. Pick it up if you already haven't, but please be mature enough to know it's just a game.
