Deciding to write a review on a game such as this is tough. It came out so long ago, what can I say that's new? Well, all I can really do is judge how well it's held up over the years. And it's held up very well.
While I think calling it ahead of its time is a little too much, but it's safe to say that it was just right for its time, and happened to be very, very well done. Its graphics don't look too fantastic today, and the characters are somewhat one-dimensional. The plot is standard Square stuff, meaning heroes must save the earth from destruction. But what's great about CT, where it really shines, is the way all this stuff is presented to you. It's not a terrible story, just average. But man, is it fun to play. That's a good thing!
Through its fantastic usage of time travel, the game has loads of things to do and plenty of interesting places to see. Characters become more interesting when you get to see them interact with people from other times, and jumping about eras as you fix loopholes in time is a great way to play. The musical score was one of the best yet for the system as well, though I believe I heard it way, way too much for it to ever appeal to me again.
Chrono Trigger is definitely a fun game. Long, involving, and with a multitude of endings, there are lots of reasons to play through it several times. While I feel that games like Morrowind and Final Fantasy 7 took the genre in its best directions, Chrono Trigger definitely deserves a hallmark for being an experience that was fun and interesting, as well as one that still is fun today.
