At the time of its release, I really enjoyed Donkey Kong Country. This was because it was right on par with any games for higher grade systems, both in terms of graphics and playability. It was simply a fun, old fashioned platform
adventure game that reminded me of the Mario games that had come only a couple years earlier.
But now, I'm forced to give it an honest review and say that by today's standards, it just isn't very fun. Games constantly evolve and become more fun, more complex, more interesting. I would be lying to you if I said that it's still worth the 8 or 9 I would've given it a decade ago. Nowadays, I don't look back fondly at the Mario games of a few years ago, I look back at the Metal Gears, the Zeldas, Perfect Dark, and Castlevania SOTN. Maybe in another 5 years those games will be passe to me, and while I sincerely hope not, It's hard to go against the flow of time and the march of technology. And while I staunchly support 2D and classic gaming (Hey, that's my childhood, after all), I can't dismiss the fact that some games prove to be just too average as the biggers and betters surpass them. A decade ago, I played and liked DKC. But I played and LOVED Mortal Kombat 2 and Final Fantasy 3. Those games, to me, remain classics of the genre, games that, to me, are still worth playing. I respect DKC for what it was, and even still is, but I just don't have fun playing it anymore, especially over gems like Grand Theft Auto or Morrowind. DKC had its time, but I think it's way past retirement, as nowadays it can't advance past its true being of a pretty simple game.
