THE SHORT: Just about the best port of the original PC game, loaded with levels and options, and with great graphics and sound. Doom fans will love it.
THE LONG: With Doom 3 looming over the horizon, I decided to check out the original version of Doom here on Gamerankings, and was surprised to see that the PS1 version didn't have any reader reviews. Well, to the small percentage of people who haven't played Doom on PS1 and aren't sure if they'll like it, here it is.
Without any real upgrades or enhancements over gameplay, this is Doom at its most direct. It's just like the PC game except it features not only all the levels but also a bunch that were in Doom 2 as well as a couple new ones. In total, there's something like 50 or 60 levels in this game.
And anyone who knows Doom knows it's all about running around dark foreboding corridors and blasting away enemies. It's been surpassed by games with much better AI since it came out (Halo and Perfect Dark are good examples) but the meat of the game is still there: Shoot anything that moves, and collect health and ammo as you go.
The Ps version gets everything right: Sound, graphics, and the general ambience is all intact. Of course it's for the mature player since pentograms and disemboweled bodies are everywhere. But that's part of Doom's appeal, and as I said, the PS version nails it.
While Doom 3 is set to be a graphical and audio powerhouse, this complete and lengthy compilation of the original should never be forgotten.
