For all you lazy people, I will sum this game up in one word: disappointing. The first Deus Ex dazzled me with its masterful blend of first person shooter and RPG. It was clearly a masterpiece to live up to the legendary status of System Shock. This sequel amazes me for completely different reasons. The first thing that I noticed was the already legendary "Pixel Shader" error message (Note to Ion Storm: you should never have to figure out how get to an error message). After violently uprooting half of my hair, I set out to purchase a new video card to satisfy the game's requirement. Upon first running the game, I was greeted by a screen that flashed whenever I moved the mouse. After a video driver upgrade, I finally set down to actually play the game. I played the game for an hour and subsequenty proceded to remove the remaining half of my hair. After the pleasant surprise that the complexity of the first game brought me, this game's simplicity borders on depressing. The only puzzles left are Doom-style find-the-key, or in this case, the keycode, hunts. The game does add, as compared to the original, to the feeling that your decisions actually mean something to the game world, but this does not mean much, as this feeling was virtually nonexistant in Deus Ex. Also, for some reason, the game's developers completely disabled the console; there is no way to access it, don't try to find one. I cannot come up with a good reason for them to want to do this; perhaps they are hiding something? To conclude, if you are looking for a great FPS, wait for Doom 3 and Half-Life 2. If you are desperate and need something to tide you over, Invisible War may be worth it.
