The World War genre is at an all time high thanks to the stupendous sucess of the Medal Of Honour and the Battlefield Earth games. And this was the major reason i wanted to try out Blitzkrieg. Blitz is a RTS based on the second world war and allows players to command Allied, Russian and German troops through several campaigns. The installation went smoothly and i didnt have any trouble configuring the game. The first shock came once i got to see the in-game graphics. Blitz claims to have a 'Spectacular 3D engine' but this was anything but spectacular. The tanks and all looked okay but thats because you cant zoom in. Fans of Command And Conquer stay far away. The lifeless fields looked more like deserts and the deserts, well they looked like deserts. The lush grass and trees associated with todays stratergy games were nowhere to be found. There was grass the palest shade of green i have ever seen. However this means that the game will work on low end computers as it did on my friends PC with 64 MB of ram. Plus you can also adjust the frame rate while playing the game and in case of mass battles if your PC gets stressed the game will automatically lower the frame rate for you. The gameplay isnt so bad, you get to control the standard tanks plus some really cool heavyweight guns like the Bofors and some really destructive air power. The AI is competent enough to hold your attention and your units behave realistically. However the biggest letdown in this game are the repetitive missions - you get to take over the countless occupied towns over and over and over again with a few 'defend your town' missions thrown in the middle. A few missions into the game and i was ready to chuck the game out the window. The bad graphics ensure that the desert and snow missions dont seem much different. The only saving point of the game is its realism. When you shell your enemy there appear holes all over the place which dont mysteriously vanish and then there's suddenly the bullseye strike which is really cool in a way. The treadmarks the tanks leave behind are realistic and when you call in air support all hell breaks loose in the enemy camp as the bombs explode everywhere and cause a lot of damage. However they are anti-aircraft guns, so be careful. And the replay value, well once you are through the game you will feel as if you have played it a hundred times over already. In a nutshell this is a game i would recommend only to hardcore wargame fans or those with low end PC's.
