EA Releases a street-racing masterpiece under the Need for Speed license...seemingly called "Underground". This game has it all, from awesome car models (real makes and no generic counterparts), crisp environments, and tons of customization to let you create a massive array of cars with tons of variations.
The game really gives players a real sense of speed as you bolt through the city streets in a blaze of Nos whether competing in a drag race, a circuit, drift challenge, or a tournament of the higher ranked drivers. Looking for a game that will boast a ton of unlockables, well Need for Speed has it. Trick out your ride with anything from roof scoops to exotic spoilers and even vinyls to slap on your ride to make it unique from other players.
The games main mode is to "Go Underground" where you are the new blood on the scene of street racing and you must prove to your peers you have what it takes to tear up the pavement and play with the big dogs. As you progress you will earn style points for your driving and unlock many different car mods from muffler tips to custom hoods and even some phat neons to place under your machine to light up the streets....let's not forget slapping on some custom headlights and taillights (which hopefully your opponents will be seeing a lot of).
The one unique area has to be the drag races. whether it be weaving through the highway or jumping a train the drag races have the sense of speed as player find it seemingly more difficult to turn the wheel to avoid traffic as the car gains speed. As you customize your car your REPUTATION meter will fill, the more tuned and outrageous your ride is the higher the level of respect other racers will show you.
After making the ultimate machine take your car online to race others from around the globe as Need for Speed supports online play exclusively on the PlayStation 2. All in all the game is great, only 2 minor problems I see here are the tracks being similar in a sense because portions of tracks can be swapped in and out with others offering some variety in races. The other would be the fact that in UNDERGROUND mode you can only have one car at a time, you'll need to trade in to acquire another....but all mods are carried over to the next car so that players will not have to start from scratch. In addition, you can customize rides in the opening menu and use parts already purchased at no additional cost...so feel free to load up the garages for multiplayer mayhem.
