Last years Budokai was a great fighting title. A wide array of fighter’s right out of the DBZ universe. Each of the fighters requiring capsules (containing fighting techniques) to do combat. The great part about Budokai was the story mode, watching the great cinematic sequences between fights which carried along the story itself.

Budokai 2 features the same basic elements from its previous installment, the capsules having to be purchased or found to be assigned to a character and the game play is exact. This time around Budokai 2 uses some great cell shading to give it the appearance of the television show. Also we find the addition of new fighters, including the 3 forms of Buu himself ( Majjin Buu, Super Buu, and Kid Buu).

Gone is the great Story mode from the original and is replaced with DRAGONWORLD....some cheesy board game-like mode to acquire dragon balls and do battle....sadly not an exciting aspect of the game. Moving on we can delve into Fusions, a great part of the game that lets you combine certain Dragonball Z combatants to form stronger fighters (not able to use in Dragon world or World Tourney). Some Fusions we find are Vegeto, Gokule, Gotenks, and so on.

Something else that differs is the furth "battling" when initiating fusions and doing certain moves like the Ultimate attacks. Punching in various button commands, spinning the analog sticks furiously all play a role in being victorious. Example you say, sure, when you try to launch Goku's Super Spirit Bomb the other player has a chance to block it. You each spin the analog stick as fast as you can and it reads out on a tug-of-war like bar on the bottom of the screen....if you hold more of the bar the attack will continue and you will deliver a devastating attack.

The improvements on the game are well enough to satisfy players of the original title but veterans will sadly be sore of the exclusion of a story mode as in the original. When you start out the game it won't be that exciting until you acquire some of the better moves, like fusions and ultimate attacks...even some of the more impressive arenas that let you smash opponents through buildings, mountains, and even thunder them across an ocean into a neighboring islands cliffside. Fighting fans will be pleasantly pleased with Budokai 2 and so will fans of the TV series.
