Azure Dreams is one of those games where you mention it, and people immediately stare at you like you said Beta-Max and wonder what you're talking about. However, despite shoddy graphics and a midly annoying story, Azure Dreams is a classic game that all people should at least play once.
Summary: You are Koh, a young boy in the town of Monsbaiya. This desert town is small, but famous for it's 40 floor Monster Tower. People fight through it, and gather monster eggs to sell or raise. Your father, dead now, was a great tamer, and it's your task now to become a monster tamer, and make a name for yourself.
So off you go into the tower to make your fortune. Here's where things get tricky. 1: You can only take five items into the tower. Generally okay since there's TONS of stuff laying around. 2: You always start at level 1 experience. Not you monsters, just you. Makes the game more challenging. 3: Floors are always random.
You'll find monster eggs, weapons, and armor, not to mention gold. Your monster will level and gain spells, and can even be fused with another monster to create a powerful version of the original monster. And as you gain cash, you can improve the town, and gain the interest of several anime hotties.
Not that the game is all great. You'll often hear the same things over and over again from townspeople, and the things they say often make little sense. Gameplay can get repetitive and the graphics are...well...just awful. However, the simple thrill of gaining money, leveling up, and seeing your town grow around you is worth it for me. So in closing.
Graphics---4. Not very good at all. Parts of the game look like the N64 could have handled it effortlessly. The characters are horribly pixelated, and the background in the tower is nauseating.
Sound---6. Annoying, but you don't notice it much. Just listen to something else when you play.
Control---8. You have a very responsive character, since the game is turn-based. You'll only slip once or twice, and the game never forces a mistake on you.
Enjoyment---8.5. But maybe that's just me. This is an RPG you have to experience to appreciate, bad graphics aside. All in all though, I'll give it....
