I've never heard, or knew anything, about the game Space Rangers 2 until recently when some guy posted a thread about it at some forum. The guy sang praises about the game, and as a cynic I doubted his every word. Nevertheless, I searched the net for more information. As it turns out, Space Rangers 2 is an open-ended, turn-based, space simulation with a classic appeal, and tons of other features. Can't get the picture? Just think Pirates! and Star Control melted together in the same pot.
There are tons of stuff to do in the galaxy of Space Rangers 2 but the variety of planetary missions are the ones that I like doing most. Ground battles, a variation of planetary missions, are real-time strategy combat. Your mission is to capture, or defeat all Dominator bases on the planet. You'll assemble and command a battalion of robots. Each robot can be outfitted to fit your strategy. Some missions are text-based, "Choose Your Own Adventure", type, which reminds me of the games I played many years ago. These missions are fun and challenging, and more than half of it requires logic and math to accomplish.
The graphics in Space Rangers 2 isn't intended for people who play games just to get the most out of their $300 graphics cards. The old school 2D artwork, however, is done stupendously, especially the planetary views. Some of the characters are done in 3D and they also blend well with the artful 2D backgrounds. Although, the weapon effects and the ships are quite dull.
Space Rangers 2 is probably the biggest surprise to me in 2005. I mean, it's a space simulation game but has features like real-time strategy combat and text-based adventure. I never would've thought that anybody would make a game like this. So if you're looking for a game, I highly recommend Space Rangers 2.
