What can be said about a game that many consider as the finest FPS of all time?
Well....
I think the place to start is that, maybe this was true 4 years or so ago, when HL was first released, but on replay, the advances of todays game, really begin to show.
From a plot point of view HL, came up with a nice scenario, which also meant they could employ a massive gaming area, due to the size of the complex they intended to use. However, the path through this complex is very linear, meaning that you don't really get the feeling that you could be going somewhere you shouldn't, too soon. You can't beat walking into a new room, the door locks behind you, and then the lord of hell shows up and you realise that you've only got a pistol and a rambo knife!
One other thing I do not like in FPS games, is the ability of computer controlled human characters to 'digest' 40 or so bullets before finally keeling over. I know a lot of people don't like 'ultra-realism' in games and I can appreciate why, but in games like this, you can make the aliens as tough as you want, and explain this due to them simply being aliens, what excuse they have for a group of marines who can be shot in the head 5 times and still mop you up, I honestly don't know.
Still, besides these minor gripes, HL is a very involving and exciting game to get stuck into, the few puzzles along the way, add a bit of variety, and the feeling of 'how much more of this complex is there' really does help to make you feel puny. Add on top of this some pretty decent graphics and lighting effects, and you get a nicely atmospheric situation.
Overall, a brilliant forerunner for the FPS world, with decent graphics and entertaining gameplay, that is only now beginning to show its age.
But considering you can pick a copy of this up from any games store for £5 ($10), what more could you want?
