Could there be a game more mind-numbing and annoying to play than Everquest? Yes there is! It's called Final Fantasy 11.
Firstly, the setup was needlessly complex, something I could easily ignore, even though installation and setup took over and hour. Worse however, is the game's interface; mouse clicking is sketchy and the default action commands require pressing multiple keys at once. The interface is also needlessly complex. This irked me after the comparatively streamlined GUIs of games such as Everquest.
The graphics are decent in some respects, but dismal in others. It's basically a Playstation 2 game ported to the PC, so there isn't too much to expect here. The sound and music are barely acceptable as well... Some of Square's worst.
The gameplay really sticks it to you though. The crafting is confusing enough that everyone uses a cheat sheet. This takes the player out of the game and encourages power-playing. The economy has already been ruined on most servers, as the game has been out for some time in Japan; inflation is rampant. In the end, the community of the game suffers, and this is one miserable community.
In my time in the game I even noticed many players with bot-scripts, allowing them to work on skills without being at the computer; while this is against the terms of service, it seems there are many players doing this (similar to Ultima Online).
I would suggest you steer far clear from this one. FFXI might have even turned me off massively multiplayer games forever.
