One of the best RPG's for any system, in years, bar none. Even the mighty PS2's lineup of RPG's, most of them are lesser games then this game.
The games story is there, although cliched, its done VERY well. This is one of the best voice acted games on any system, even if some of the voices get annoying at times they fit their characters perfectly. You'd be hard pressed to find fault with the voice acting here minus a few sappy moments of collette's whiny voice and maybe a little of Genus now and then. But over all every single character gives a stellar performance, even the characters that don't have main roles and lots of lines, like bosses, are done well! Which is fantastic!
The battle system is where you'll spend most of your time in this game, its like a fighting game. Oonce the battle starts up from the world map, ala the switch from world map to battle mode ala older final fantasy titles, you'll take control of one of the characters (namely Lloyd) who's uses twinblade sword, you can choose which character to use by putting tht character into the first slot and leaving the other character, even the main one, on the AI, to let the AI use it during battles. You can play and use any character as your "main" character while in battle, which is cool.
Also if you can play 2 to 4 players if you have extra gamecube controllers during the realtime battles and each person can control one of the 4 party members, which can be fun if you all dig RPG's but can be a little tedius because you'll be level grinding to constantly run into monsters to keep everyone else occupied, it sure makes stocking up your guys and doing multi hit combo's easier if you have people controlling the other characters to keep the combo chains going.
The battle system is the best part, the better you do, the more bonus experience you get if you get high hit combos (consectuive chained hits with no breaks). You can get over 150 hits toward the higher levels and near the end of the game, which is insane.
It plays like and harkens back to the day of 2D fighters where you could only move on one plane to fight against one another. Even though the battles do take place in realtime and in 3D you still move along a 2D straight line plane towards the enemy you have targetted.
There is so much to do in this game, side quests, mini quests, getting titles that give you bonus character stats per level, etc. The game lacks a little in the way of items, weapons and armor customization (read, no customization) but it makes up for it by doing what it has well, this game is executed very well.
If you dont like the battle system you may want to skip this game, because if you are not a fan of 2D fighting games and realtime RPG battle systems, anime or light-hearted off the wall stories, you may be disappointed with ToS.
It's a Japanese anime influenced RPG at it's core, so if you dont like them or are weary of checking out ToS , rent it first.
