Top Spin 9/10
As a result of a few flaws, what could of been a great game is merely really, really good.
This game is pretty darn good, I loved virtua tennis, and in many ways, this is even better. I do have some complaints, though, so lets get them out of the way. Most importantly, there are no mixed matches. That totally sucks because tennis is one of the few videogames I can get my girlfriend to play with me, but she doesn't want to be a guy. Inexusable. The career mode's not the greatest, but works. The one thing that drives me nuts, though, is that these tournaments you need to play take like over an hour, and there's no way to save in the middle. It's like 3 sets of 5 games for 3 different players. I don't think you should have to commit yourself for that long in any game, let alone a tennis game, which lends itself to pick up and play. Finally, and this is a very minor complaint, the ball boys just sit there, even if the ball hits the net. What's the point, in virtua tennis, those boys would run and get the ball.
Now onto the good. This game is incredibly fun. The camera is good. You can't always be at the bottom of the screen, even when online, but there's a close up camera, which works really well. The graphics are great. The create-a-player is pretty good, but no tiger woods. There's lots of different moves (top spin, slice, lob, etc.). This game completely grows on you. The more you play the more you appreciate some of the subtleties.
Another great feature is xbox live. I don't play a lot on xbox live, but this is the perfect game for it. Sometimes, there's a bit of lag, but overall, it's great. I played a totally smooth game, and I found out he was from germany (I'm from chicago). I was impressed, plus I made a new friend from germany. Be warned though, some people are pretty darn good. I thought I was great, and some people would completely spank me. I beat a few people too, though. Also there were not as many people online as I hoped, or they were already in games. I would usually have to wait a minute or two for a game.
I love this game, and I think you will too. There are some flaws, which gives them a reason to make a sequel. Strongly recommended.
