Mario Kart has always been about the multiplayer. I remember endless nights on my SNES with my friends over-heating my old RF adapter so we'd eventually have to shut off the system. Mario Kart 64 was even better; four of us could play, not only in races but in the ever-popular battle mode. Jumping off 3-D buldings knocking those balloons off with a red shell. So I'm a little sad that the battle mode in Double Dash is leaving me wanting. The battle mode just isn't exciting, I don't have that tenstion when someone shoots a green shell at me; I think it's because you can't jump in the game anymore.
But Mario Kart is really a racer, and for racing it's very fun. You can cooperate with a player by sharing the cart (one person drives while another shoots the items). Or vs., the courses are hightly interactive and there are secret turns which lead to shortcuts or item boxes; exploring the stage is half the fun. The racing controls are loose and accurate (I'm still trying to jump into my turns though). The cup classes seem to be more challenging than in past games which is nice because I want to savour the racing stages.
