I was very excited when I heard that FF would be coming back to Nintendo's consoles. I was somewhat less excited when I heard about Crystal Chronicles. Here is why.
Graphics: The graphics in Crystal Chronicles look great. The characters are detailed and the water looks nice, but where are the CG movies ?
Story: Crystal Chronicle's story is a little bit lacking. Which is surprising since the FF series is known for their involving plots. It is cool how a lot of the people you run into stories intertwine for some nice backstories, but overall the story is not that good.
Sounds. There is not a lot of spoken dialouge like in FFX, but everything else sounds fine.
Gameplay. In Crystal Chronicles when you play multiplayer you are required to use a GBA. Which actually works pretty good, but I still think the controls feel better on the gamecube controller, which can only be used in single player. L and R changes between the action your using while A and B use the currently selected action and block. The spell fusions also work great and require a lot of communication with your teammate. All of this sounds good, but there are just as many bad things about the gameplay as there are good. The biggest of these is the bucket that you are forced to carry around and drop every few minutes to fight. Holding the bucket also considerably slows the player down, which can really get on the other players nerves since you have to stay close to the bucket, but this is not a problem in single player because a faster moogle carries the bucket for you. Another flaw is that you are constantly waiting for the other player while they are talking to someone or messing with there menu.
Replay: Crystal Chronicles is not nearly as long as the other FF games, and not as fun to play through again either.
Overall: I was really hoping that
Crystal Chronicles would be a great game, but an average game will have to do. If square-enix had simply left out that stupid bucket this would have been a much better game. I'd rent it to play with your friends because the multiplayer is much better than the single player. Buy four swords instead it is much better.
