Farcry is one of those few games taht comes along very rarely, and as soon as you get five minutes in, grabs you buy the throat, and whispers in your ear, "I AM YOUR LIFE FOR NOW." It hasn't been since Half-Life 1 that a game has gotten me so enthralled as to think about it every single waking moment.
When I play it, I'm thinking, "GOD! THIS IS AWESOME!" But when I'm not playing it, I think, "I wish I was playing Farcry right now."
The gameplay itself if solid. The action isn't as good as some other FPS games I've played such as the original Half-Life. It comes close and provides players with a wide variety of fun things to do.
Unlike in Half-Life where each battle was essentially a puzzle with a set solution, Farcry is game of nonlinearity. Instead of hunting for that one way to get trhough a battle, you'll experiment with different things that'll get you through the battle only to be forced to do them again when you accidentally fall off a cliff just after the fighting is over.
Even with that repetition, you still get to experience each fight differently every time you go through it. Sometimes, you'll want to take a side route through the shrubberies, and other times, you'll be going right up to the enemy and pumping 15 bullets into his plastic-looking face.
However, that gameplay alone would not make me feel like this is the wonderful game taht it is. What drew me into it was the aesthetic. I suppose it is best likened to having Ah-nuld Schwarzennegar play in a James Bond movie. Or, you're just Ah-nuld as he is in Commando. Its really your pick of waht action movie best gets you pumped to feel like you're in.
To further the feel that you're something like Ah-nuld, your character has what I assume is intentionally bad voice-acting. Your character will occasionally spew out a tremendously corny line with horrible delivery. Its one of many details that just make you feel like you're in a huge-budget action movie.
Alot has been said about Farcry's graphics, and I'll try and keep my input short. The CryEngine provides the best graphics of any game released in 2004. And it even looks better than anything released so far in 2005. (For people in the future, the month I'm writing this in is September. The year is almost over.) Seeing a massive expanse covered in thick foliage with shadows being cast over things, and excellently rendered water surrounding it is just a sight to behold. Its almost prettier than a real tropical island. Running the game wtih all settings on high just makes it fabulous.
Farcry is a magnificent game. I recomend it to everyone whose computer will handle it.
