The game is more than a solid venture into Zelda-esque action/adventure game. Its an excellent game that innovates upon aspects of the Zelda series and in many ways outshines it.
Ultimately, I find it to be a better and more fulfilling game than almost any other Zelda-esque action/adventure game I've ever played, but this is not the end of my review.
The graphics are simple in most sections of the game, but some areas are truly beautiful, and ooze with artistic style. This is particularly in some of the ruins and the more celestial areas of the game.
The plot isn't overly complicated as is expected in many RPGs of today, but it has a lot more substance than most games of the genre. (I'm only referring to ones I've played. I never got into Secret Of Mana/Seiken Denetsu so please don't argue with me.)
Some may complain that the plot carries a blatant message of environmentalism. Others may consider a strong point. I personally see the plot as entertaining. Everything ultimately deals with afterlife, environment, reincarnation future, and ultimately emotion.
I'm not giving specifics about the plot because I don't want to spoil it, but its quite entertaining, and just shallow enough not to alienate anybody.
The gameplay itself is straight out of Zelda and is a lot of fun. The highlighting feature is that you can morph into other forms in combat areas. The main difference is that the alternate forms are more powerful, but they also look really cool.
Another feature is that EVERY ROOM in EVERY DUNGEION presents the player with an oppurtunity for getting more powerful. By beating every monster in a room, you get special bonus that improves one of your stats. It creates a nice drive to get everything you can out of the game, and it doesn't hurt that combat is fun too.
Checking out this game is definitely worth doing, and it should be played by everyone.
