Final Fantasy Tactics is dark, it's deep, and it's totally awesome.  If you'v overlooked this game in the past, I implore you to reconsider.
Looking at Final Fantasy Tactics you might wonder why instead of a roman numeral there is a Tactics at the end.  The thing that seperates this from other Final Fantasies is the why battles play out.  If you've ever played any of the Tactics Ogre series you might recognize this setup.  Each battle takes place on a board game like surface which you move you characters around and fight.  The result is strategery and challenge like to other game has to offer.  FFT is a hard game with a steep learning curve to be sure, but once you've got it mastered, the battles are endlessly fun and much more rewarding than they are in the numbered FF's.
The storyline of FFT usually gets a mixed reaction.  FFT is about a country divided becuase it can't decide on an heir to the thrown.  Cuaght in the middle of this conflict is the young noble Marche and his not so noble freind Delita.  From their the story gets so deep many people have a hard time keeping track of anything that's going on.  While I agree the story is a bit convuluted at times, after playing through the game a few times, things start to make sense, and the games thought provoking themes will probably seem much more, uh..., provoking.
Graphically, FFT features decently drawn sprites against fully 3D backgrounds.  Not amazing to be sure, but still rather cool.  The CG cinemas that typically grace PS1 era FF's are sadly missing except for one at the begining and one at the end.  The music in FFT is usually very dark, but is brilliantly composed and fits the mood well.
Sadly, no minigames in this FF, but don't worry, customizing your troops is a task great enough to keep you entertained for hours.  Trying to achieve some of the more obscure jobs is a very rewarding process (Try to get the dancer or bard in your party.  They might not seem usefull but they can truly create choas).  Also, our freind Cloud Strife from FFVII is a playable character, see if you can find him.
So if for some reason you decided not to get Final Fantasy Tactics becuase of that "Tactics" you are really missing out on one of the best Final Fanatasies there is.  The dark stroy may seem overwhelming, but the intense gameplay make sit all worthwhile.  My rating: 93%
