Half-Life 2 is by far my most anticipated game ever.  And now that I have finally played and beat it, I can say with certainty: Half-Life 2 has just knocked off the original Half-Life as my favorite game of all time.

The beauty of HL2 is its simple approach to presenting the world: nothing is out of the eyes of Gordon Freeman, the HEV-suited protaganist from the original game, and for this, there are no pauses for cut scenes.  In addition, the whole game is one continuous level, just like the first, so it never feels like a new place or zone is coming out of thin air.

The number one new addition to the immersion factor, however, is the amazing new graphics engine.  The Source engine is incredible, especially for its ability to create eeirely realistic people.  I've never played a more human game.  Everything from the subtle movements to perfect lip-syncing, to the incredibly expressive faces, these characters feel like real people, with real emotions and reasons for existing beyond just be characters in a game.

The story of the game is wonderful as well, and really engaging.  If you've been following the series from the first game, you'll have plenty to sink yourself into in terms of story.  However, the ending of HL2 is a hell of a cliffhanger, which ends up creating more questions than answers.  This was the one point about the game that I didn't like.

The first HL won most of its accolades for amazing gameplay, and HL2 has this in spades.  The biggest addition to the already solid gameplay is the Gravity Gun, which uses HL2's physics to great effect.  With it, you can create makeshift weapons out of objects in the environment, stack boxes to reach hidden areas, and pull otherwise out of reach items towards you.  Valve did a great job of implementing this gun, and you will be using just as much, if not more than, all the rest in your arsenal.  Overall, the game is just a blast to play.

Half-Life 2 is a defining moment in PC games, and one of the most intense, realistic, and immersive games ever.  If you own a PC that can play it, this game is an absolute must have.

Briefly-

The Good- Amazing new graphics engine; deep immersion factor; Gravity Gun makes the gameplay shine.

The Bad- Story comes to a halt just as it gets good.

The Bottom Line- A new PC classic, and one of the best games of all time.
