This review is for, like me, new comer to MMORPG. World of Warcraft was my first MMORPG and I tried it because of all the good review I saw. I thought that for my first MMORPG I shall try the best of them.
Now, I can see how well done WOW is. I won't go through all the features as you can read this from any review on the web right now. What I'll give you is the impression of a new newcomer in MMORPG.
RPG stands for Role Playing Game. Now even on RP server that should be dedicated to Role Playing, I couldn't find anyone willing to Role Play their caracter. Furthermore, for me a Role Playing game is filled with a good story line, something twisted that will suprise me. Now in WOW their is no such thing as a story. EVERY SINGLE mission is the same : Go there, kill that many creatures, bring back proof of your kill. To the exception of some FEDEX guy mission where you must bring something to someone, all of the missions are the same.
All the review said that the downtime was very minor in WOW compare to other MMORPG. Well it's a good thing I began with WOW cause I found traveling a big lost of time for nothing. Although you can fly to different location, it still takes time and that time is plain dull. Again, according to all the review, being kill in WOW is handle wonderfully. Well, when I resurect in a graveyard 10 minutes walk away from my corpse it piss me off.
Don't get me wrong. I think WOW is a great MMORPG. The world is fantastik and profession are well handled. You can easily get to level 15 without any help and continue to level 20. But there, you'll need some buddy to go through some mission. The players I banded with were good and enjoyable, althought half of them quit in the middle of the quest. when you're in the middle of the Venture Co Mine and you know there is no way you'll be able to get back without being killed....well let's just say that the more solo I can do I do. But then again, the intersting items are in mission where you need to gang up so you can't really just solo.
So basicly, MMORPG is not for me. It's always the same thing over and over again, killing things and getting back to get reward. No story line à la Baldure's gate. you need to invest a lot of time. (I'm at about 25-30 hours of playing time and only at level 15.) All the interesting spell and habilities are at level 20 and more so if you're a casual gamer like me, I suggest you stick to Diablo II. The system used is very close to it and you'll progress much faster.
PLEASE, GIVE US A SINGLE PLAYER RPG that have those professions thing and a detailed world like WOW and I'll be happy. I don't want a game that is obviously made so that I don't level too fast in order to get my 15$ next month.
