Most RPG's usually focus on a strong story, a lengthy adventure and a great experience, while graphically not being that impressive. Golden Sun is a bit of a change of the norm, as it is a bit short by RPG-standards, features a story that's predictable and not too interesting. However, the game-experience is great, and it looks and sound amazing, even now, quite a while after it was released.
As I said, this is the type of game that right from the start gets your attention because of stunning visuals, and with very nice and colorful "standard" graphics and spectacular graphics during the battles you fight, this still is among the best-looking games on the GBA.
But the game is portably even more impressive sound-wise, not only are the sound effects very pleasing and unusually loud for the GBA, the music is fantastic. There are some tunes that are so good, you, instead of playing the game, listen to it, and enjoy them. There are a bit too few tunes, though, the only downside.
Less satisfying is the story, which is moved along by incredibly lengthy (and not too interesting) dialogue, and with the tale being predictable, and lacking real plot-twists and fascinating characters.
The gameplay more than makes up for all of this, with a world full of well-made puzzles, enjoyable battles and some fun mini-games. Addictive and varied, Golden Sun is highly entertaining and with replay-value that is far stronger than in most RPG's it also lasts a long while, even though the main-quest isn't that long. Here are the scores for the different categories:
The not-too-impressive story can't damage this game's experience as a RPG that looks and sounds fantastic, is extremely fun to play, and is a proud jewel in the GBA's beautiful crown. Buy it!
