Sonic comes to the GBA, in this game that now competes on the same platform as his old enemy Mario. To be fair, Mario has usually beaten Sonic game-wise, proving the fat plumber is the dominant video-game character in platformers. What can Sonic Advance do with Mario's dominance?
Graphically it is better than Mario World and Mario Brothers 3, but inferior to Yoshi's Island by far. Sharp and colorful, not to mention smooth considering the speed the game plays at, and while it doesn't make your jaw drop, it is still very nice.
The sound-effects are pretty weak and nothing to care much about, but the sound-track is very good, with heaps of different tunes, some of them great.
The whole thing is very different from the Mario-games, with control that at first feels weird, but you eventually get used to. Four playable characters is great for the variation, the levels are varied and pretty well-designed, and the speed-based gameplay is very fun when you keep up the speed, though frustrating when you get hit by enemies. The boss-battles are great fun.
Lifespan-wise, the game isn't long, but four playable characters, and a time-trial (yes, a time-trial in a platformer) boasts the lifespan, in addtion to a mini-quest as a separate game.
