Final Fantasy VIII. One of, if not the most, anticpiated RPG of all time. It came after Square's greatest accomplisment in the FF series, so what is everyone expecting? Something better maybe? Well, 9-9-99 was that fateful day that everyone was waiting for...
Graphics: Final Fantasy VIII definately boasted the best graphics of any other FF game, and of any other RPG at the time. The characters actually looked like people. You could see the formation of their hands and such. It was really amazing. The cinematics are awesome, and even rival some cinematics in some of today's games. Overall, this game is graphically outstanding.
Gameplay: FFVIII brought in a new way to get magic and summons. The Draw system. Basically, you selected draw, chose and enemy, and you took magic from them. And, sometimes, on bosses, a "???" would appear, and if you drew it, it would be a Guardian Force (summon). It was really iventive, but far from being fun. It was more of a tedious chore than anything. The leveling up system was way to easy also. Every new level, you started with 1000EXP to get. It never took long to level up. By the end of the first disc, you could be level 100 and have everyone's ultimate weapon by refining items using the cards. Plus, Junctioning magic was something new also. Instead of the traditional armor and such, you equiped the magic you draw to boost stats. It could be confusing, but they had an Auto Junction option, which equipped all the best stuff for each stat that you had. Too easy again. Enemies also leveled up as you leveled up. Boring. But overall, it was still a fun RPG to play.
Story: It starts off really cool, about a war and such. And that war builds, but in the midst of it all comes an evil sorceress, and...*gulp*....love. UGH! The biggest draw back that an FF game could have. A love story. BORING! But, the war thing was still really cool, and made up for a really good storyline.
Replayability: There is a lot to do in FFVIII. I've played through it about 6 times. It's well worth it, since there are also so many options, and the story becomes more clear each time.
Overall: FFVII, this did not become. A good RPG, it did however. FFVIII, even though dogged by many, was still the best new RPG on the market at the time. Sure, it didn;t beat FFVII in many ways, but it is still a damn good game. Play it.
