1998 was the year that FPS games took a very heavy part of my life away. Half-Life was released, and it sucked my brains and melted my eyes because I stared at my computer screen for a good 5 hours a day...playing single player and TFC. Here's the low down on what Half-Life is to me:
Graphics: For 1998, these were top-notch graphics. Even today, 6 years later, I still think Half-Life has some of the best graphics in a FPS that I have seen. The enviroments were really detailed, and the character models were very stunning. Overall, even though they aren't the best looking today, I still think they look the best.
Story: The story is actually REALLY good. Espcially if you boarden it by playing the counter parts Opposing Force and Blue Shift. Basically, to sum it up, an experiment goes wrong, aliens come out of no where, and the Marines are sent in to kill everyone and everything that moves in the facilitated area because the government doesn't want the information about this accident to leak out into the public.
Gameplay: Easily the best controls for a shooter ever made. It's hard to beat out a keyboard and mouse when it comes to FPS games. The PC just has the best fitted controls for this type of game. The length of the game is fairly long also. It can take anywhere's from about 15-20 hours to complete, and even longer the harder the difficulty setting. Plus, with internet multiplayer games, the number of life hours you will lose to this game online playing Counter Strike or TFC will be countless.
Replayabilty: It's 6 years old and I still play TFC religiously today, as do thousands of other people. I think that speaks pretty well for itself how well this game has replayabilty. Oh, I forgot to mention the other hundred thousands of people who still play Counter Strike.
Overall: THIS GAME IS BRILLIANT!!! It is one of my most favorite games ever made. I recommend this to anyone who loves shooters. No shooter stands up against this one, not Halo, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark...NOTHING! This game is the best FPS ever made...and proabably will always hold that title. Period.
10/10...on that scale. But on my scale, it get's a 12/10 :)
