Finally, the game has made it to the PS2 from the PC, but is it the same? Yes..er, well No. Think of a diamond…. No, to expensive. Think of a sapphire. Nope, still too expensive…Ah, got it. Think of an orange. Take a bite out of it. Oops, forgot to remove the peel first didn't we? Ok. Now take the peel off and bite in. Better? Well that is how the Baldur's Gate franchise is. The first game on the PC was rough and complicated. It hadn't been peeled yet but was still edible. Now the PS2 version is different. It is a peeled orange that has had the extraneous stuff that bogged the game down originally removed.
You play this game in the ever-present quest available to all young men and women in a Fantasy Role-playing Game…. Save the city, or the earth, or the land… well… save something anyways, whatever you decide on. As you travel through, under, and around Baldur's Gate you engage in just this sort of quest. Even though this is a standard formula for an RPG game, it nonetheless manages to keep us entertained again.
You will fight, magic, and level your way through this game in pursuit of life, liberty, and a strong ale (or lamb's milk for those underage). The thing that keeps you playing this game is that despite the fact that you've done this sort of thing dozens of times before, it is still fun.
Is it fun enough to buy though? Only if you like replaying short games. This game took less then a week of low attention gaming to complete and leaves you with no doubt that they want you to buy two games for the length of one. Other than that, a good game to play on a rainy afternoon.
