I can't stand the game critics of today. Many of them can't handle a prequel, and many of the gaming magazines and review sites are biased against anything hiving to do with Gamecube, it is an accomplished fact, the lawyers are getting it into writing as I write this review. This is one of the most underrated games in history, it was hated by the critics but loved by all those who have an open mind. Enjoy.
GRAPHICS: 10/10
Wow. That's all I have to say, just wow. These are the best graphics on the market today, by far. If you can find a game with better graphics than RE0 at this present day, I will revoke this entire review, because the visuals are simply stunning. All of the characters in the game look like they are right out of a movie, not a detail missing on their contstantly horrified faces, they actually look like real people. Capcom spent a lot of time working on the character visuals in this game, and it really paid off. When a zombie comes at you in a cut scene, you can see the terror in Rebecca's eyes as she stares down the fleshy throat and wonders if this is the end. The enemies are also very well done in the game. The zombies look like they were once people, but they had been run through a meat grinder and picked up some old clothes from their closet. There are many different sizes of zombies, from the fat to the anorexic, helping to create a better sense of the person that they used to be before they are knawing on your dead and lifeless body. The dogs are a real piece of work, they look really real, with bits of flesh torn out of their body in random places and foam coming out of their mouth as they leap to take you down. The crows are very realistic, they look like they do in real life, flocking down upon your characters for a tasty after-school snack. The plant enemies look like they are right out of the jungle, ready to nibble on your characters as you explore their haunted domain. The spiders look just like the tiny little creatures that they are modeled after, it's just that they're about 3000 times as large. And the bosses are simply stunning, you haven't lived until you have seen the Tyrant chasing after Rebecca or the Queen Leech being killed. The enemies are very well-imaged in RE0.
Another great visual effect of the game is the fantastic detail of the backgrounds. I understand that they are pre-rendered, but the backgrounds simply cannot be beaten by any type of visuals on the market, pre-rendered or not. You can see the individual hairs of a moose mointed on the wall, the texture of the mortar in between the bricks in some rooms. It is simply fantastic to see the detail that was put into the backgorunds, it looks just like a haunted building would look in real life (or so I assume, I ahve never been inside a haunted house). Some of the elements of the backgrounds also have moving elements, such as flickering candles and the wind shaking open windows around at will. There is nothing like watching Rebecca walk accross the top of a speeding train in the middle of a torrential downpour, it is the best that viusals on this generation (or any generation, for that matter) have excelled to. The backgrounds of Resident Evil 0 are exquisite, there is just nothing better available, period.
One more thing that is fantastic about the graphical quality of Resident Evil 0 is the cut scenes, which are just gold if you look at the picture quality. They are perfect, they might as well be cut scenes from a movie, you really can't tell the difference. The cut scenes go beyond the already magnificent visuals of the regular play in the game and make the visuals score so much higher, if there was something more than a 10, these visuals would receive that honor.
There is nothing that they could have done better or added to the visuals, they were simply perfect in every way, I can't think of one way that I would want them to be changed.
SOUND: 10/10
You can't really beat the sound in any Resident Evil game, they always put in the most appropriate sounds of any game that I have ever been in contact with. All of the sounds and music are in the right place, without exception.
First of all, I have to give Capcom all of the kudos in the world for making some of the most approprite music I have ever heard and inserting it into this game. The music is perfectly orchestrated, all of it makes you feel tense when the maker needs you to be tense, to feel releived when that is what the maker wants you to feel, and gets your adrenaline pumping during the heart-pounding boss fights. When you open a door that something you don't want to meet is behind, you can hear the faint sound of your beating heart against the screaming of the violins of the orchestra thta recorded the music. It is simply beautiful, how the music and the game blend together seamlessly. When you are fighting a zombie, the atmosphere will be startled, scared, and sometimes ready for action. I beleive that the music in this game actually rubs off on the player and effects his or her mood, it is just that good.
The sound effects in the game are just as good as the music is, but one is pointless without the other. You will hear dogs growl at you when they are about to leap at your throat, but that is pointless without the great music in the backgorund. You will be able to hear your footsteps on the linoleum floor, and the background music will affect how you react to these sounds. They work together to create a perfect blend of sound perfection.
There was also nothing better that they could have done to improve this section, except for two things. I would have liked a few more musical tracks in the game, and i would have liked to hear more character dialogue. Other than that, Capcom did an amazing and commendable job.
CONTROL: 8/10
These are definitely above average controls, but they are far, far from perfect. They are generall modeled after the original Resident Evil Remake for the Gamecube, but there are critical and even fatal differences between the two control schemes, and here's why. In Resident Evil, you only controlled one character and his or her movements. In Resident Evil 0, you control no less than 2 characters and their movements. The developers would have had a hard time making the controls for the world's first second person shooter any way that they approached doing them, and they put a few snags into the game that made the control score plummet. First of all, the C-Stick turn around thing that I like so much in the first one when I was playing for time is gone, and that has pissed me off a lot. What's even worse is what it's replaced by, a control for another character within the room. This is awful, especially since oftentimes you cannot see the alternate character and what direction they are facing, and the C-Stick control is based on the fact that pressing up makes the character walk in the direction that they are facing, so the other character is often walking the opposite of the way that you want him or her to move. This is a terrible feature of the control that makes me loathe the controls of this game. I also don't like that there is no in-game configuration menu, like there was in every single other Resident Evil. it has been replaced by a character join button, a pretty useless feature because you can do it on the items subscreen anyway. I hate the new controls, but the old ones that are in place are so good that I keep the review for this section moderately high.
They coud have come up with a much better character switch systm for RE0, they shouldn't have changed the old controls as much as they did but only altered them slightly, this would have helped this section's review a lot. Take these words of wisdom to heart, you person that ruined a great control scheme. **Shakes fists**
GAMEPLAY: 9/10
What can I say? This was a very entertaining game. It was full of all of the things that I loved about the other Resident Evils, such as amazing graphics, great and appropriate sound, a control scheme that is one of the best (although it was altered for the worse in this game), and an engorssing and beleiveable story that makes you feel right alongside the characters of the game. I think that they could have had a deeper plot, cooler enemies, and some better character dialogue and more secrets to the plot than they did to make this and the ultimate review a 10. I thank Capcom for making this great game, it was nearly perfect, but nearly isn't good enough in this dog-eat-dog world.
THE BOTTOM LINE
If you enjoyed any of the other Resident Evils, play this game. If you enjoy video games, play this game. If you are sane, play this game. If you eat food, play this game.
There you are, all you ungreatful and biased critics. I ahve given a fair review of this game, something that very few of you produced. All of you need to seriously review as a credible reviewer, because if you didn't give this game more than a 7/10, you lied at some point in your review.
