To tell the absolute truth, I haven't really been impressed with what Metroid has been cooking up this generation. Metroid Prime was a good idea and a successful game, but I wasn't as impressed with it as other people were, and I felt that Metroid Fusion was just an attempt to cash even more in from Metroid Prime's launch. However, in early 2004, my faith is restored in Metroid.

Welcome to Metroid: Zero Mission. This game is supposed to be a remake of the original Metroid game for the NES, and in a way it is. You will find many things similar to what they were like in the original game, but Nintendo made the game actually play out more like Super Metroid for the SNES, and since Super Metroid is one of my all time favorite games, I felt that it was a good move.

So here is what you do in this game. You take your character (Samus Aran) around the planet of Zebes killing enemies with your neato weapons. The farther you travel into Zebes, you will find even more powerful enemies that can only be defeated by using even more powerful weapons. In order to find these weapons, you have look for them. Sometimes they are in the most outrageous places, like inside an ordinary wall that you have passed several times. There is also some slight puzzle solving. For instance, when you are in a vertical shaft that you can't jump up all the way through, you might need to use you ice beam on the flying enemies to create platforms for you to climb up. However, you won't have to use your brain too hard, as most of the time, what you have to do is pretty obvious.

When you look at the graphics of this game, you are going to wish that the original Metroid would have such good graphics like this. I'm not saying that these graphics are the best graphics you will ever see, but for handheld standards, this is pretty good. During your expedition, you will here some familiar Metroid tunes. There is the Metroid theme music, which sounds pretty good, and the famous "boss battle" tune.

Zero Mission comes with some interesting twists and unlockables. In the first Metroid, the game ended after beating the Mother Brain, but in this game, the game continues with one last section. Perhaps the best thing to grace the game is that when you beat the game once, you unlock the original Metroid game as a bonus, which was neat for me, seeing that I never played the original game. That was a very nice unlockable! Also, you will find yourself replaying the game in order to accomplish several goals, like completing the game with a 100% item collection or beating the game in a short amount of time. The game itself is not very long and will at least only take 2 hours of your time.

All of this good stuff equals up to a 10/10 for me. I never really found any real flaw to the game itself and the best part about the game is it's really fun to play, especially when you get bored of playing your other games.
