Homeworld sounded like THE next step in RTS games. So I gave this game a chance and discovered what Relics first game had to offer.
Homeworld had one major innovation going for it. The space combat (which just sounded cool, like Star Wars) would take place in a completely 3D environment. More on how I got around in that environment later. Now what was absolutely stunning in Homeworld was the presentation. From the gorgeous graphics to the very inventive story line and how it played out. That coupled with very good music that set the mood and you had yourself a very immersive game environment. You really appreciated all of the above when a space battle ensued. Colorful ships buzzing around at odd angles. Large capital ships shooting out massive lasers. Tons of explosions and chem trails from the small fighters. You get the picture, the space battles were like watching a movie. However this space opera had its' problems.
The bad things I have to say about this game stem purely from personal issues.
The 3D movement was a pain in the butt. I never realy did figure out how to move my ships around with ease in that environment. Due to my lack of navigational skills I never got around to finishing this game. Also another personal issue. I felt the pacing of the game was pretty slow, then it would jump to really fast as you got attacked. When that happened I'd have one hell of a time trying to control my units. So basically my major gripe with Homeworld was that controls were either A not very user-friendly or B I was just too retarded to figure them out. Either way it took away from the games overall appeal.
If you seek a truly 3D environment which features space battles then this game is for you.
