When I got my PSP I set out to find the one game that had a good buzz around it. That game was Lumines. After many months I finally found it online and didn't hesitate to snap it up. I can safely say that the time I spent looking for this game was not wasted. Thus far it is the only reason why I am holding onto my PSP.
Quick review in fifteen words or less: A puzzle game that brings something new to the genre and boasts great music.
Gameplay
Line up blocks of similar color and form squares with them. While you go about doing this, a "timeline" will slowly move from left to right across the screen deleting any squares that have been formed. On occasion a special block will spawn. This special block has a green gem in its centre and has the ability to delete all the blocks of the same color that are touching the square it is in. The challenge comes in when you start getting blocks that don't really seem to easily create a square with a solid color. Then the blocks stack up and the squares you have formed will not delete until the line passes over them.
Audio
This game has so many different tracks I can't easily identify the game with one. You will hear all manners of music as you play and surprisingly it all adds up to a fun experience.
Video
As per norm with all puzzle games the best they can hope for is clear and crisp graphics. Naturally Lumines possesses both attributes and has a nice variety in backgrounds and blocks.
Replay
Challenge the CPU, play your favorite "skin", play against another human or try the puzzle mode. All of the above are options waiting for you to discover. I personally preferred the single skin mode where you are able to replay any "skin" you may have unlocked from other gameplay modes.
Rent or buy?
If you like puzzle games Lumines is a definite buy. Great music, lots of replay and tons of variety makes this game feel fresh every time you fire it up.
