Gamers who grew up spent hours scrolling through games like Gradius and Contra will find an excellent, souped-up modernized version in R-Type Final ... though besides incredible eye candy, it doesn't advance the genre much (what's left of it). Therefore my score of 7. After being blown away by the number of options and big jump up in presentation and music (at least from the last time I played a game like this), it became a rather routine scroller. Sort of like a V-12 in a Toyota Echo. But the acid-laced trip down memory lane is worthwhile, especially given the discounted price the game is selling at ($30) at most places. WARNING: I have a wife who's pregnant who had to leave the room when I played it. Not for the queasy! :)
