Featuring seamless 3D gameplay and animation, Final Fantasy VII contains hundreds of pre-rendered, computer-generated backgrounds and features real-time battles, vast map screens, and a complex and engrossing storyline.

A struggle to determine the planet's future...

This eagerly anticipated sequel represents not only a rebirth of the Final Fantasy series, but also the creation of gaming's first multi-million dollar blockbuster production.  The combination of lush CG cinemas, pre-rendered backgrounds, and polygonal characters infuses the game with a style unlike anything before it.  You control Cloud Strife, an ex-soldier with a troubled past who joins forces with a terrorist organization to fight the tyrannical Shinra corporation.  The plot is lengthy and complex, unraveling as you collect other characters to join your crusade.  Although the setting is more modern and futuristic than previous games in the series, gameplay retains classic elements such as an overworld map to traverse, dungeons to explore, magic spells, summoned monsters, and random encounters with riff-raff.  One feature integral to the game is the Materia system, as differently colored crystal orbs must be equipped in order to learn magical spells.  Materia can be linked and combined to create unique spell effects.  The game features character designs by Tetsuya Nomura and an epic soundtrack by longtime series composer Nobuo Uematsu.

Story

Explore a world of black destruction -- and unimaginable beauty.  Wander through dripping sewers, abandoned towns, ancient forests.  Bustling cities stand high above the slums they have created on a plate supported by pillars, forever shunning the poverty and ruination from view.  Despite the yet-untouched breathtaking splendor on the outskirts of the planet or the candy-colored, plastic facade of the Las Vegas-style commerce center, this is a world without hope of tomorrow.  The mega-conglomerate Shinra, Inc.  has a stranglehold over the planet's natural resources through their Mako Reactors, which permanently leach the essential life-force from the land.  A few rebel groups have been formed to fight these sinister forces.  The most powerful of these groups, AVALANCHE, includes some of the strongest, cleverest and most passionate fighters the world has seen, all of whom have lost something of personal value to the evil corporation or perhaps have suffered even greater indignities.  With the addition of their newest member, Cloud Strife, a former Shinra SOLDIER, AVALANCHE may just be primed to win back control of the world.

Playing primarily as Cloud, you have the starring role in an epic saga that spans 3 CDs of gameplay -- and will call on both your physical and mental powers.  Prepare for terrorism, cross-dressing, a train graveyard, a city-sized amusement park, fortune-telling, animal racing, stealing, snowboarding, and the fight of Cloud's life, which will take you deep inside the planet.  You will travel to the bitterest frozen tundra, an exotic island resort, an ancient forest, a village made of giant bones, numerous caves, and Cloud's hometown.  Oh, and if you start to hear voices in your head, don't fret -- you're right on course.  Suffering from partial amnesia as a result of a horrible event in his past, Cloud is also searching for his childhood hero, the legendary Sephiroth, who seems to have disappeared off the face of the planet.
