Onimusha was a long time coming.  With this kind of wait, it's easy to either forget about a game altogether, or anticipate the title so much that it can never meet expectations.  Onimusha does neither.  It was worth the wait, although you'd think with the time they had, the game could have been a little longer.

The graphics are likely to please most gamers, although some might be put off by the 2-D backgrounds.  The animation and characters in the game look downright wicked.  This can't really be argued.  There's also plenty of blood and gore, and tons of atmosphere.  The backgrounds, while colorful, are still 2-D.  It doesn't matter, though, because the game's art direction is so gorgeous, most gamers won't mind a bit.  The CG cutscenes are some of the best, most detailed in gaming history.  They simply have to witnessed first-person, and the game's almost worth the price of admission for them alone.

The gameplay is standard Resident Evil style.  Most gamers either love or hate it.  Since I've never had a problem with it, it works fine here.  The controls are laid out nicely, and you warrior moves around with more agility than what we are used to in the Resident Evil games.  You can now dodge much more easily, as well as block attacks.  The combat system is nice, and you'll eventually gain more swords and powers to use against the evil creatures you'll encounter during the game.

The story and presentation are top-notch.  Onimusha progresses nicely, with a good sense of direction, good voice acting (it's nice that they included the Japanese voices with English subtitles), and some really incredible chapters to the game.  This is one of those games that you'll miss dinner for.  Once it pulls you in, you really don't want to get away.

And, sadly, that's the one flaw in Onimusha, and it's rather glaring.  Onimusha is a short game.  Before you know it, it's over, and your left staring at the screen, breathless, wanting more.  All the same, it's an excellent game, and well worth your money, just for the experience of playing it.  However, just don't expect to get more than a weekend or two playing time with it.
