Space sometimes are a funny genre. Some space flight games try to dazzle
you with realism (astonishing since they don't exist yet), some attempt to
throw you into space with physics that are almost identical to any other
flight sim with gravity, and others find a happy medium. Tachyon is that
medium. It's one game that actually does a nice job of making you believe
you could be flying in space without all the theoretical crap thrown in.
You're a mercenary combat pilot in the future, and you actually have a story
to follow, and it's pretty well-written. The game features the voice acting
of Bruce Cambpbell (from the Evil Dead trilogy) which makes this game worth
a purchase all on its own. The game is enhanced by your ability to make
money and outfit your ships with new weapons and accessories. Add that to a
wide variety of ships, and the game gets even better. Multiplayer support
is there (although I've only tried LAN play, and that was a blast) and is
supposed to be outstanding with 120 players battling it out. The graphics
are nice and smooth, the audio nicely done with atmospheric music, and the
game's pacing and levels are varied and fun. What I'm saying is that it's a
damn good game, and worth every penny if you like space combat games, or if
you like fast-paced action games. It may not overthrow my personal
favorite, Freespace 2, but it's right up there. It's a fun, solid game.
What more could you ask for?
