Dropship: United Peace Force is a space flight sim that will keep those gamers craving the next Colony Wars title satisfied till reinforcements show up, as long as they can come to grips with the academy's strict flight regimen.
In UPF, you're put into the part of a flyboy in a futuristic army that does the job of the recently disbanded NATO and UN: keeping the peace all around the world. Apparently, there're a wide variety of terrorist scumbags in the future as well: your tours of duty will take you through 20 missions on both land and air completing various objectives. Among them are escorting/protecting convoys, dropping off forces to combat enemy threats, and good old-fashioned seek-and-destroy missions.
Bam Entertainment would have us believe that the near future is a very bland place: while the look and feel of a military operation is thoroughly presented throughout the game (and manual); the textures, ships, levels and explosions look plain. Not awful or bad, just…plain. Where the graphics aren't up to par, the sound does its part to make up for it with the above-average voice acting, as you'll be briefed before every mission, and your superiors will constantly update your orders during your missions. This serves to engulf you further into the game, since the voice acting is just so believable.
However, there's a big flaw that takes away from the enjoyment of Dropship: its control scheme. You have to double-tap the X button to enter "flight" mode, and double tap the square button to enter "hover" mode. One would think a toggle button would have been easier. In addition, the movement controls for your ship actually changes depending on the mode you are flying in, which can make combat extremely difficult. Landing your ship also seems to be more of a pain than it needs to be.
If you're getting impatient for a space shooter on the PS2, and the various Star Wars titles aren't cutting it for you, give Dropship a rental before you buy. However, the average civilian gamer will find the control scheme too needlessly complex to want to enlist in the UPF.

Storyline Overview
A new power has come to the fore in China. Although NOT democratically elected this new regime seems to be complying to all international law and therefore the United Peace Force (UPF) remains more concerned with trouble-spots in Sahara, Colombia and Kazakhstan. However, over the course of the game you learn through your wingman and co-pilot (events unfold in FMV) that this new regime is squashing all resistance with brutal force and worse still, attempting to build a new super technology that will render the UPF's attempts to create world peace - obsolete.
