There's no doubt about it; Operation Flashpoint is a special game. It's one of those games that make you smile while you're playing it. It makes you realize just how special games can be and how, when the right team puts together an ambitious title, the final product really can be just as good as advertised (or better). It's definitely not for everyone, but for those willing to put in more time than usual in your average shooter, you'll get much more out of Operation Flashpoint than you'll ever expect.
Don't go into this game expecting a fast-paced action game. Operation Flashpoint definitely goes for realism, and it looks like it succeeds brilliantly. Now... I haven't been in a real war, but I imagine this is pretty close to what it's like. Imagine walking through the barren landscape with only a few trees for cover. Ahead of you is a small, seemingly innocent village with trees outlining the border. Out of nowhere your team is under fire, and you don't even know where the enemy is. You and your team drop to the ground and scan the horizon as people are hit or injured all around you. Finally, you can see the flash of weapon fire in the distance, and move in for the kill... ever... so... slowly.
The environments and situations you will encounter are equally exciting. You'll start off being a foot soldier, but will eventually lead men into battle, drive ground vehicles, and fly helicopters into battle. In a game that is so ambitious, with this many features and options, you'd think it would be a mess (something like World War 2 online comes to mind), but Operation Flashpoint manages to pull it all off, and with class.
The graphics and sound are both a mix of good and bad. The graphics are at once able to awe you, and make you wince at its ugliness. For instance, the overall graphics package is awesome. The engine allows for you to see way out into the horizon, over hills, entire forests, and small villages. It's absolutely awesome to walk through a landscape at night, the sky crimson red and enemies possibly lurking everywhere. Sadly, not everything looks that great. Trees and many of the objects look grainy and low-resolution up close. Character animation is poor, as the soldiers don't move too convincingly. Still, the vehicles look good at a distance (seeing an enemy copter hover overhead, hunting your team down, is just plain awesome), and the engine seems to work brilliantly with the type of game it is.
Add in some realistic A.I. and incredible challenges, Operation Flashpoint becomes one of the best buys of the year. It offers countless hours of action, the ability to download new features and missions online, and some multiplayer with tremendous potential (although I haven't tested it fully yet). Be warned, however. Some of the missions require patience. This is NOT a game that allows the gamer to run through the forests, firing your automatic weapon at will. No... more likely you'll be crawling through the trees as the enemy flashes through your sights over and over again as they move to your position, weaving back and forth through the trees.
