UFC Throwdown is what would happen if Ken Shamrock and Sarah from Virtua Fighter had a lovechild in the middle of an octagonal cage.  While that's not the prettiest baby to ever grace the Earth, it's also not the least attractive, either.

Based on the mixed martial arts competition of the same name, UFC Throwdown puts you smackdown in the octagon that made its way to pay per view circuits formerly dominated by pr0n and WWF events.  Tekken this ain't, however, as you must use strategy as well as strength to beat your opponents to a bloody pulp.  For instance, a guy trained in kickboxing would be ill-advised to try and takedown a freestyle wrestling specialist with a headbutt and a submission.  On the surface, it seems rather deep.

However, as deep and complex as it may seem, each guy only differs in the way you'll take them down once you have them on the mat.  The three main "attributes" so to speak seem to be takedowns, submission, and strike.  Whether you're best advised to smash their face in or dislocate their shoulder is dependent on their style compared to yours.  Once you have your fighter's style down, UFC really becomes an exercise in "going through the motions" till you win the belt.

If there's one area UFC could have used a lot more work in, it's the presentation: while I realize that UFC is more about sportsmanship than showmanship, having 3D character models on a video backdrop that pop out at you like a sore thumb (or worse, an item in an early RE game) is unacceptable.  Sound is also strictly middle-of-the-road, as a decent announcer and great sound effects are put off by the same hideous entrance music track and the fact that all the other voice work in the game looks like a dubbed anime.

Still, UFC matches are short, not-so-sweet, and to the point.  In fact, the announcing and ring intros often last longer than the matches.  UFC Throwdown proves that "fast" doesn't have to mean "mindless", and those who are longtime fans and new to the series alike will probably find a lot to like, as long as they don't run in, DOA skills a'blazin.
