Rally Fusion stands up as being one of the finest racing titles available, regardless of what system you play it on.
Fusion was obviously not made to topple the GT3s and Nascar games of the world, as the title is highly focused on arcade racing. This gives it a pick up and play vibe that provides for lots of quick fun: you can easily be up and racing within seconds of turning on your machine, without worrying about things like tires, gear ratios, etc. These can all be tweaked if you wish, but not extensively. In this game, you won't be doing things like examining the effects that a new driveshaft will have on your performance.
Both versions of the game control smoothly, but the slight edge goes to the X-Box version for the Dreamcast-like triggers. Driving with those and using the "A" button as a handbrake just seems natural. Granted, the PS2 version is controllable with the shoulder buttons, but I think the hand positioning will be more comfortable for most gamers with a choice on Microsoft's system. As I said, it's only a slight advantage, but it bears mentioning.
Visually, Fusion is no slouch, but won't be winning any awards…on the Playstation 2, at least. On the X-Box, however, Rally Fusion shines with gorgeous car models, lighting physics, and the illusion of the shimmer of light reflecting off of wet pavement. Rally Fusion's graphics are a prime example of how the extra power of the X-Box should be utilized. The audio isn't licensed tripe, or Eurotrash. Thus, it gets a passing grade. The engine and crowd roars both are adequate, but nothing special.
Rally Fusion is a great game for those who enjoyed Rallisport Challenge, and are looking for something really similar. Fans of rally games, or just arcade-style racing titles as a whole, should check this one out.
