Hot Wheels Velocity X gets everything right but the handling of the actual cars.  A shame, isn't it?

There's a lot of modes, options, and cars to be found here.  That's good.  The basic idea of the game is also good, too: think F-Zero, with wheels, loop-de-loops, and the ability to attack and perform tricks.  Now imagine sluggish controls and an inconsistent framerate ruining all this potential.  Most of your missions consist of the checkpoint racing variety, with the aforementioned loops and destruction in between.  There are a few other types of gameplay, such as protection of vehicles, collection of doohickies, etc.  All of these have something in common, though: you're fighting the controls more than the clock or the opposition, and that's never a good thing.

Hot Wheels manages to be both bland and intriguing in the visual department at the same time.  While the whole "future racer" thing works well as a theme, the textures and overall art design leaves something to be desired.  And have I mentioned that inconsistent framerate? Oooh boy!  The audio, on the other hand, is the definition of generic.  It's exactly as you'd expect from a game of this sort, and no better.

I suppose you could have some fun with Velocity X if it was your mission in life to do so.  But with so many better racing titles currently available, (I'm still playing GT3) why go through the trouble?
