At the heart of any game is a gimmick. Think about it. Be it graphic violence, pretty graphics, or online play in an always-expanding community, every game – good or bad – has a gimmick. Most good games, however, have a great deal of awesome gameplay to back that gimmick up. And it is here where those games and BMX XXX part.
Boobies and bikes are at the heart of XXX, but somewhere along the line, Acclaim forgot about the latter. While there is certainly some evidence that there was, at one time, a kind of framework for a good BMX game present here, that time has long since past, and much like a good archaeologist must dig through layers of dust to find his fossils, you'll have to dig through layers upon layers of bad jokes, ugly pixilated breasts, and horrible flaws in gameplay to see the relics of what could have been.
If you are going to incorporate humor into a game, you had better make it work. Otherwise, you end up with a travesty like XXX, where four out of five jokes are duds. The developers attempt to remedy this by throwing around f-bombs like cash at a strip club. Needless to say, it doesn't work.
It's also not far-fetched to say that the actual videos are less than impressive, from a strictly pornographic standpoint. Sure, some of the girls are mildly cute, and unless you have the censored PS2 version, you may see a flesh mountain here and there, but it's not even worth the frustration it takes to unlock these videos. Each level has several goals, and unlike THPS 3 or AI's goal videos, XXX gives you no idea at all where to go, or what to do in order to fulfill any given goal. Given the massive amount of tokens needed to unlock just one thirty-second FMV, those into XXX for the sex appeal would do well to just hop on the internet, and start downloading off of Kazaa.
Aside from the strippers, the visual presentation leaves a lot to be desired. Everything here in terms of graphics could have been done on a Dreamcast, perhaps less. I think that speaks volumes about where the development time went, no? Sounds fair a bit better, but even the occasional alternative/hip-hop track between spats of nu-metal cannot save this atrocity to gamerkind. Wake up, Acclaim: even your target audience, kids who can't buy "real" porn, can access it online or through their friends. There's no need for them to pay fifty dollars for this. A real bomb.
