Command and Conquer: Generals doesn't bring much innovation to the RTS genre, and there are far better options out there for your enjoyment. What Generals does have going for it is a somewhat realistic face change on a beloved series, and that alone will be enough to keep fans of past C/C games interested.
Instead of the cheesy factions of C/C past, Generals puts players into a war that has three primary players, all vying for domination. There's China, USA, and a terrorist Al-Qaeda style faction, dubbed the GLA to keep criticism to a minimum in today's political climate. Each faction does have its own strengths and weaknesses, and the three forces are eerily similar to those from another RTS classic, Starcraft. The GLA is like the Protoss, requiring you to efficiently micromanage your powerful units, the Chinese are similar to the Zerg, with their strength in numbers approach, and the USA is much like the moderately balanced Terran.
However, unlike Starcraft, and much like C/C games of years gone by, Generals isn't exactly a dramatic masterpiece. It's certainly better than its predecessors, –what with their bad acting straight out of a porn movie and all – but fails in contrast to the epic stories woven by the genre's current champ, Warcraft III.
Despite its lack of innovation or a cohesive plot, Generals does possess a tremendous graphical upgrade over other games in the C/C legacy, and the gameplay doesn't stray far from the tried-and true mechanics that helped make Command and Conquer synonymous with Real-Time-Strategy. The latest Command and Conquer game does seem to be resting on the laurels of past accomplishments, but thankfully, those laurels are certainly strong enough to support it.
