Fire Blade continues the tradition of the old 16bit "Strike" games, while bringing them into the 3rd dimension.
As a member of a organization to destroy rogue eastern militant groups, you take your airborne war machine to the skies and take out tanks, copters, planes, bridges, etc. Along the way you'll have to pick up items in arcade fashion to keep yourself from getting blown out of the sky, and to keep the guns a' blazin'.
However, if Fireblade sounds like a complete arcade blast, it's not. Though much of the game plays like it, and the powerup structure is similar to a mindless shootfest, much of the game revolves around tedious "stealth" levels where you must cloak your copter and remain unseen. For those looking for a roaring good time blasting through waves of enemies, this will become a royal pain mighty quick. The controls seem much too complicated for an arcade game, yet there are too many enemies firing too damn fast for a simulation. Much like Dropship, it's like the developers just couldn't decide what kind of game to make.
At first, Fire Blade will bring up old memories of a day gone by, but ultimately, you'll just be plugging in your old copy of Desert Strike to nurture those feelings of nostalgia.
